Don't Try
Quote from Charles Bukowski’s gravestone- ‘Don’t Try.’
Bukowski explained the phrase in a 1963 letter to John William Corrington:
“What do you do? How do you write, create?” You don’t, I told them. You don’t try. That’s very important: not to try, either for Cadillacs, creation or immortality. You wait, and if nothing happens, you wait some...

HOME: The Epic Journey comes to a halt.
What does HOME mean to you?
The word ‘home’ means something different to every being. We must stop imposing our own meanings onto other folks and their lives. It is time to shut the curtains, lock the front doors and turn on the front stoop light. Next sit down in the rocking chairs of the living rooms of our minds and begin writing. Well, that is my game plan at least.
Facebook and EGOS are...

Freedom v. Discipline
I am perpetually torn between the two. Where do I draw the line before I drive myself to insanity?
Self-inflicted unemployment is a double edged sword. It’s been 4 months of juggling and limbo. I stopped blogging and giving my weekly updates, I needed to be a recluse for a while. Recently I have been facing the boundaries of being an idealist in an ego fueled, materialist world. If I keep...

Week 13
Time has engulfed me. Finally I let go.
The same friend who helped me make the video submission has joined in on the ride. Together we explored Somerville, the Waterfront and Fort Point. We picked through piles of vintage threads, walking away with distinguished pieces to suit our personal styles.
She showed me an abandoned retail space that would be perfect for my art concept business. However,...

Seth Godin: love him or hate him. I don’t agree with all of his marketing hoopla but this book spoke to me…
Stability is an Illusion. The factory is dead.
Managers run factories —> process. Leaders create movements —> change.
If: the market today craves change and new things.
Then: the market craves leaders.
Tell stories with a passion. Illustrate your vision of...
Week 12
I broke up with the restaurant I was waitressing at. I co-worked some more. Then in the midst of the video-making for the Levi’s contest, I lost track of time. My friend Mandy and I watched several sunrises over the course of the week.
First was learning self-awareness. Watching yourself on film is highly revealing. I recommend it to everyone.
After adjusting my quirks for the camera, I...

Week 11
An unexpectedly profound week of growing and self-discovery.
I visited my mother at her home in Bolton. I saw my middle school art teacher. I went to a fantastic networking event and met some fellow freelancers and entrepreneurs in the city. I went to a burners meetup group in preparation for Burning Man. I volunteered at SomerFun- a street fair supporting local businesses run by a friend. I fed...
The Missing Puzzle Piece.
6/8/2010 - An unexpectedly profound Tuesday.
Sometimes the answers to life’s most burning questions are not found in foreign lands. They are actually right under our noses. Who knew that a regular visit home to see my mother would lead to such therapeutic self-discovery.

Reflections on Life
There’s something about dancing around in a techno bubble for three days that brings about profound realizations…maybe it’s the controlled environment. being isolated from real world problems and distractions.
Also, being around different kinds of people and seeing/hearing their life experiences really puts things into perspective. I feel lucky to have the ability to choose my...
week 9
Prior to leaving for the long weekend, I had a fantastic week of connecting with some innovative Somerville folks. I had a business meeting with a friend who runs Somerville Local First- a grassroots initiative to boost local economies. I shared the financial projections and profit model for my business with him. He was extremely supportive and gave me some key pointers. I also stopped by the...
week 10
DETROIT ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL.
drove out for Memorial Day weekend dance adventure with a few friends from Boston…needless to say: epic times were had by all.
I was introduced to all sorts of new electronic sounds that were beyond the categories of dance music and techno music that I knew before. I discovered Detroit is a multi-faceted city with soul and character. The techno from the D...
summer reading list
remember these things?
I decided since I am having one of those ‘middle school’ summers (rebellion, waitressing, music festivals, etc.) that I ought to have a summer reading list.
here it is:
-The Tipping Point (done)
-Freakonomics
-Rise of the Creative Class
-The Element: How finding your passion changes everything
-The Art of Reasoning
-The Creative Economy: how people make...
TED talk about creativity & educational systems.
2 types of ppl in this world: the ones that divide it into two types and the ones who don’t. life is a symbiotic network of our talents and surroundings, rather than a linear path. we should learn to recognize this in order to realize our full potential and unlock our true passion.
I am beginning to think that I am not there yet…I...

Never show all of your cards.
An older, wiser friend of mine gave me this advice recently…
There’s something powerful about silence. Even between people. An ‘unspoken alliance’ is stronger than a verbalized agreement. I’m learning to observe more, talk less. Poker face on.
Being candid is still me, but it doesn’t work for all occasions.
week 8
so tired. not enough sleep. (been working at the restaurant)
but here’s the quick update:
found some partners to run a ‘trial night’ of my concept. we’re looking into vacant warehouse/loft spaces to use. one of them talked to the owner of a sweet place in the South End, we sent over a description of my biz and the event…I’m literally pinching myself with...
week 7
Theme of Week: CHILL THE F*CK OUT.
yea in my ‘work’ & personal life. it’s that simple.
Note: this was a freelance tip from previous post- “When things pick up, slow down.”
I really need to realize that life is a marathon, not a sprint. For the past 24 years I have been in mad-dash mode chasing after some intangible dream/prize/goal for fear of disapproval from...

The Tipping Point
Finished reading this book by Malcom Gladwell- was a quick and interesting read.
I drew a lot of inspiration from the examples and lessons, given my current state of mind. I think the key to making an epidemic turn is subtleties. observations. patience. and knowing how to ask the right questions.
This theme crosses over into my personal life as well. Subtleties reign. I’m workin on it!
to-do lists, notebooks, & yoga
I was wondering what was off about the last two weeks! Duh.
Misplaced my to-do list, ran out of notebook space and skipped yoga. Equates to one nutty, whacked out girl.
Gotta get my groove back today.
Steven Grasse PSFK talk- story of a disgruntled ad guy turned creative entrepreneur…hm sounds inspiringly familiar. much respect.
week 6
Continuing to hustle. so tired. not enough sleep. hmm why is that? oh yea I started waitressing at Precinct in Union Sq. & danced my heart out last night at MIN.
Theme of Week: TRIAL BY FIRE.
I looked at my to-do list today and saw for Tuesday one item was - Update Blog. Well thank god I didn’t do that onTuesday. I evaluated by April spendings. over budget of course. So on the way...
TED talk: What Adults can learn from Kids
Child prodigy Adora Svitak urges us to stop using the term “childish” with a negative connotation. Fearlessness and Optimism are typical of “childish” behavior, but are those really bad things? No. They are actually great traits to have for an entrepreneur. I am thinking of myself as less crazy now for dreaming big.

week 5
Ok so my last post said I was going to hustle harder after a kick-start from my mentor. WELL, I am now two weeks behind updating this blog because I have literally been non-stop hustling ‘til it hurts. pain feels so good. (I’m still going to keep the weeks as separate entries)
Theme of the week: Subtleties & Street Smarts.
I tweaked my approach from merely hitting up people on...
